Why does the water in a toilet flush clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the southern? (or is Join or Log In to answer.
Well, there is such a thing as the Coriolis effect. It explains why macroevents such as hurricanes rotate in a clockwise direction in the Southern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere
-modcom (41Q / 7683A) Fri Oct 17, 2008 6:37pm

There IS such thing as Coriolis effect that explains many events BUT it is an urband legend that this is the cause for the toilet flushing thing.
-meowdoc (27Q / 418A) Fri Oct 17, 2008 7:53pm

Even Wiki says: A misconception in popular culture is that water in bathtubs or toilets always drains in one direction in the Northern Hemisphere, and in the other direction in the Southern Hemisphere as a consequence of the Coriolis effect.
-meowdoc (27Q / 418A) Fri Oct 17, 2008 7:53pm

This idea has been perpetuated by several tv programs, including an episode of The Simpsons and X-Files. In addition, several science publications (including at least one college-level physics textbook) have made this incorrect statement

take it to the dealership or mechanic.
-Mangangali (29Q / 6759A) Mon Sep 15, 2008 11:17am

Typically only shops/dealers have the ability to do that. It's sort of the point so people get their cars fixed.

# Turn key to Acc
# Hold odometer push-button in
# Turn key to On
# Watch the odometer reading turn to dashes
# Watch the dashes slowly disappear
# When the dashes all go away, and turn to zeroes, release the odometer button

If I know the value of something @ the 50th percentile, how can I figure out the percentile of something else? How about Join or Log In to answer.
Say, if 200 ppl have written an exam and u'v got 99 percentile, that means there are 198 people who have scored less marks than you
-duos (0Q / 729A) Sun Aug 24, 2008 7:01pm

For Nth percentile, we first calculate desired portion of total no.of observations. coz N is defined as percentage, we divide by 100 to get actual fraction of total number of observations:
N / 100
-Camargue (0Q / 192A) Sun Aug 24, 2008 7:03pm

Then, we multiply by the total number of observations to find the number of observations that make up the actual portion of observations within the specified percentile:
N / 100 * COUNT(*)

-Camargue (0Q / 192A) Sun Aug 24, 2008 7:04pm

Comments:
Is it possible to figure out the percentile without knowing the number of observations? For example, I have a value of 5 at the 50th percentile, but I want to know what percentile the value 4.25 belongs to. How would that be done?
