No, Limewire itself isn't. Acquiring copyrighted music for free in any way is though. Limewire is meant to be paid for to work now. This is why it isn't shut down.

If you download copyrighted music without paying for it, yes it is illegal. If you download music which is under a creative commons or other such license it is legal.

If its a major artist on a major label it is most likely copyrighted.
If you've heard it on the radio, its most likely copyrighted.
If any of your friends have also heard of the group, its most likely copyrighted.
