i have to reinstall windows xp due to a virus, but i lost my orignal cd but i borrowed another on can i use someone elses product key ? Join or Log In to answer.
are you using a laptop? if you are, there should be a validation sticker on the bottom with your product key. otherwise, using another person's product key will give you problems with windows validation.

no, don't use someone else's product key. What slikwacko said + Dell also sticks product keys on the sides of their desktops. You can also download and run SIW from gtopala.com to extract your Product Keys on your CURRENT PC.

continuation of last question.........i did what you said. here it is pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.60GH'z 1.60 GH'z, 128 MB of RAM what do those parameters mean, idont get it. for ending processes, i do that but i dont know which one's to end, it ends up getting errors then restarts. u need LOTS more memory (RAM). it should be 512 MB Minimum, preferably 1 gig, or even 2 gigs. you should probably take your computer into a store to do this, as they'll need to remove the old ram and put in new one.
-sharkey (71Q / 1335A) Mon Nov 26, 2007 7:51am

totally agree with sharkey. If you are running WinXP - 512 is BARE minimum I'd personally recommend - but RAM is so cheap, getting 1GB should be minimum and even plenty for 90% of people. 2GB would prob cost about $40-50 in parts.
-takabanana (0Q / 7A) Mon Nov 26, 2007 8:57am

really wow....i didnt know. so more ram huh. what about the GH'z. is that normal not. what is it even used for.
-Chris17 (117Q / 19A) Mon Nov 26, 2007 9:26am

Pentium 4 1.6 ghz CPU is low by today's standard, but sufficient for normal activity-browsing,chatting. upgrade your ram, and get someone knowledgeable to look at your computer to remove unnecessary programs, especially on startup.

if you don't do video editing, video/graphics effects, large photoshop/photo editing - then 1.6GHz is MORE than plenty. just get more RAM. 1 or 2GB should be plenty for a few more years.

extension.....to last qustion even while it keeps restarting at the ms-dos screen/ windows xp loading screen i can retreive the data with a usb cable........or no? are there other methods Join or Log In to answer.
As said before, you'll need a LiveCD to complete the task. Linux distributions with NTFS read/write support work best for me. You may have a BartPE based Windows XP disc or a BSD LiveCD. The choice is yours. However, you will not be (1/1)
-jabagawee (4Q / 23A) Sun Nov 25, 2007 9:19am

able to extract anything from the computer with simply a USB cable and a hard drive; there is no software to move the data, right?
-jabagawee (4Q / 23A) Sun Nov 25, 2007 9:20am

best is take the hard drive out of the computer, connect it to a IDE/SATA-USB adapter, and connect that via USB to another computer to copy files off of it (this is how to get data off when the original PC doesn't boot up)
-takabanana (0Q / 7A) Sun Nov 25, 2007 9:20am

U can also try these softwares 2 retrieve data

Have you tried booting from your Windows XP CD? Does it still restart after doing that and getting to the Windows setup menu?

Bad power supply, bad RAM, or overheating (make sure all fans in computer are running when on and aren't blocked by anything). Retrieve data off of hard drive by connecting to a device that allows any hard drive to be connected via USB.
-takabanana (0Q / 7A) Sun Nov 25, 2007 9:09am

use an external hard drive and a liveCD to extract/back up all the data from the computer. in order to fix it, we would have to know some more specifics about your problem.
-jabagawee (4Q / 23A) Sun Nov 25, 2007 9:10am

I have seen this before and my resolution was to intall another copy of Windows XP on the computer (not a reformat install). This will allow you to still access any data that is on the computer but you will have to re-install your programs.
-SolaDude (0Q / 4A) Sun Nov 25, 2007 9:12am

normally this happens wen ther is a voltage fluctuation or the UPS battery is slow. it keeps restarting
automatically.
