Thinking of installing linux mint 5 for mother in law. She only uses her pc for pics, e-mail, and word. Any suggestions? She gets viruses, malware

Sorry, I've seen this but just don't know to properly answer. Do you think it's better she has linux to avoid malware or would proper antivirus software be better?
