When did the euro begin to be in use in france and spain. Did the conversion happen gradually?

it was a gradual conversion: there was a fixed franc to euro rate, and you had a certain amt of time to convert. started jan 1, 1999

On new year's day 2002, France, like the other 11 members of the Eurozone, started using Euro notes and Euro coins for cash transactions. Within a few months, the old coins and banknotes in were withdrawn.

skush is right, i read wrong: euro introduced to world financial markets as an accounting currency in 1999, as physical banknotes in 2002
