Lack of proper diet and exercise, family history. My first symptoms were having to urinate frequently, I was always thirsty& tired, and reoccuring yeast infections. I have type 2 diabetes, Type 1 is different and I don't know of that type.

No one knows why any developes Type 1 Diabetes, but symptoms include increased thirst and urination, constant hunger, weight loss, blurred vision, and extreme fatigue.

High Risk Factors for type 2 Diabetes include (webmd):
High blood pressure
High blood triglyceride (fat) levels
Gestational diabetes or giving birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
High-fat diet
High alcohol intake
Sedentary lifestyle
