it keeps you breathing and monitors your vitals. as long as its plugged in it'll keep you alive or until your body naturally fails

Life support therapies utilize some combination of several techniques: feeding tubes, intravenous drips, total parenteral nutrition, mechanical respiration, heart/lung bypass, urinary catheterization and dialysis.

The problem is that "life support" is a generic term - it can be anything from a feeding tube to heart-lung bypass machine.

Its not neccessarily a machine as oppossed to a set a protocols designed to keep you alive with the assistance of various machines. You can have a ventilator, a heart and lung bypass machine, dialysis. All of these are life support.

Depending on which machine, and depending on your definition of "dead", you can be kept "alive" a long time. Brain-dead patients are often kept on life support to facilitate organ harvesting, for instance.
