Is there any reason behind the colors of the american flag? Join or Log In to answer.
The American flag was adopted in 1777 and originally called The Stars & Stripes. Over the years, tradition has given meaning 2 colors.

RED is 4 hardiness & valour
WHITE is 4 purity & innocence
BLUE is 4 vigilance, perseverance and justice
-symphony (0Q / 196A) Sun Aug 31, 2008 8:57am

No legal one, but George Washington said: "We take the stars from Heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes shall go down to posterity representing Liberty.
-Yeraze (4Q / 86A) Sun Aug 31, 2008 8:57am

Stars are considered a symbol of the heavens and the divine goal to which man has aspired from time immemorial; the stripe is symbolic of the rays of light emanating from the sun.

-brochos (262Q / 93A) Sun Aug 31, 2008 9:01am
