Does anyone have any tips on keeping i.e. and e.g. straight? I can't ever remember which one means what. Thanks! Join or Log In to answer.
i.e.
Stands for "that is," & is used in place of "in other words," or "it/that is." It specifies or makes more clear.

i.e. means "that is" or "in other words" like a clarification.
e.g. mean "for example"
good luck remembering that, i still google it each time i want to use it in an essay.

i.e. = that is
e.g. = for example

How I remember..
that "I"s = i.e.
for "E"xample = e.g.

You know...I think I've told myself that before, but, like slikwacko, I Google it each time.

e.g.
Means "for example".
"I love contact sports, e.g., Hockey being the one of the roughest."

Grammar Girl says: From now on, i.e., which starts with i, means “in other words,” and e.g., which starts with e, means “for example.” I = in other words. E= example. basically the same as mylicons answer..

(To jedwardcooper)
i'm still not gonna remember that
-slikwacko (0Q / 2410A) Wed Mar 12, 2008 10:25am

that makes sense! i make things too complicated.
-musicmethod (840Q / 435A) Wed Mar 12, 2008 10:28am

e.g. means example given. it almost spells egg, which is more likely an example than used with i.e. Be weird to say, "I found this round thing outside laid by a chicken, i.e. egg"
Sorry that's all i can think.

What is the speed limit in your state? Join or Log In to answer.
Lowest I've seen is 5MPH, Highest is 70MPH. Have just about everything in between in multiples of 5.
